I visited Katsuoji Temple with my family in mid-June, and it turned out to be a truly meaningful experience.
Actually, I had been planning to visit the temple a few months earlier, but my schedule didn’t allow it — until my sister came to visit and mentioned the “Daruma Temple.” That was the perfect sign to finally go!
Here’s a brief introduction to this fascinating place:
What is Katsuoji Temple?
Katsuoji Temple, founded in the 8th century, has long been considered a power spot for victory and success. Its name comes from the word katsu (to win), and people come here hoping to “win” in life’s various challenges.
Nestled in the serene mountains of Minoh, just outside Osaka’s city center, the temple is surrounded by lush gardens and scenic views. It’s especially breathtaking in autumn when the leaves turn vibrant shades of red and gold. A peaceful setting for reflection, intention-setting, and recharging.
Known as the Temple of Winning (勝運の寺), Katsuoji has welcomed visitors praying for success in exams, business, sports, and personal growth for over 1,300 years. It’s also famous for its connection to the iconic daruma — the red, round dolls that represent perseverance and determination. If you’re visiting Osaka, this is a must-see spot where history, culture, and hope come together.
The Meaning of Daruma at Katsuoji
Daruma dolls are symbols of persistence and resilience. Their round shape reminds us: no matter how many times we fall, we rise again.
When you make a wish or set a goal, you fill in one eye of the daruma. Once your wish comes true, you fill in the other eye to show gratitude.
At Katsuoji, many visitors leave their daruma behind after their wishes are fulfilled. As you walk through the grounds, you’ll see thousands of daruma dolls — big and small — lined up like silent guardians of dreams and determination. It’s a powerful and moving sight.
